AZ-900 is not a formal prerequisite for AZ-104. Microsoft does not block you from scheduling AZ-104 without passing AZ-900 first. If you have hands-on Azure experience already, you can, and probably should, skip AZ-900 and go straight to AZ-104.

AZ-900 (Azure Fundamentals) is a 45-minute exam with three skill domains: cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and Azure management and governance. It costs $99 USD via Pearson VUE. The questions are conceptual. There are no labs, no CLI tasks, nothing requiring hands-on time in the portal.

The overlap is real but limited

AZ-900: Most people with some IT background pass in 10-15 hours of study using the free Microsoft Learn paths. The free practice assessment on Microsoft Learn is genuinely representative of the real exam.

Salary and employer signal
